Uncle Al Lewis and Captain Windy (WCPO)
The man everyone in Cincinnati knew as "Uncle Al" has passed away.

Al Lewis entertained thousands of tri-state children and their families as host of "The Uncle Al Show" from 1950 to 1985 on WCPO. According to the station's web site, Lewis' program actually began as a call-in show. Viewers were encouraged to phone in requests for a tune to be played by Lewis and his accordion. Children eventually became part of the audience and they apparently dubbed the program "The Uncle Al Show."

Lewis' wife Wanda joined the program in 1956. Her character was known as "Captain Windy."

    "Uncle Al" Lewis was 84.

I always hated Uncle Al. Children are not stupid, but he always talked down to the "audience" (who paid for the pleasure of being there).

Thinking about it now, I can see that the dumbing down of America started with Uncle Al.

Yeah, well, I won't speak ill of the recently departed.

But there's nothing shameful in being truthful, and the truth is, he made a lot of kids happy, and he apparently also made a lot of the ladies happy....

Radio personality Paul Harvey died the other day too. I loved listening to his program. We used to have a wonderful AM station here called The Gull and it played my kind of music and ran his program still. It felt so odd just a few years ago to be able to listen to him when I remember my mom listening to his program on WKRC when I was a little kid. That station is now talk radio, he's gone and I'm not a little kid anymore...
